The primary aim of this organization is to help the people of Bonthe Island (particularly women and children) become self reliance and independence and to provide basic education and health care for the children of Bonthe.

The long term goal of the organization is to establish a well-to-do working class in Bonthe Island, where the adults can save reasonable amount of money enough to provide quality education for their children. It also aims at capacitating the women of Bonthe most of whom have become vulnerable and dependent as a result of the decade long civil war. Since the organization is in its infant stage, we will at first focus on maintaining a help project already started at a Bonthe elementary school.  We will also focus on growing cassava and rice and establishing a fishing depot to provide fresh fish and other sea food to the Bonthe community. The organization’s work will, in the beginning, consists of volunteer staff in Norway and Sierra Leone.

In its bid to ensure that SLCBO is self reliance in the future, the membership is of the firm conviction that the organization must be able to generate income for itself. It is for this reason that SLCBO bought a piece of land near the capital Freetown call No. 2 River. This area is situated about 10km from the centre of the capital in an area well known for its beautiful beaches and touristic attractions. It is hoped that this piece of land will be developed to provide opportunities for the many unemployed and uncared-for youths in and around the No. 2 River community.

With the help of well wishers like donors, charitable organizations and private individuals, SLCBO hopes to establish a first of its kind youth and cultural centre. Key areas of attention will be fitting the youth centre with a musical training facility, media centre, a computer training institute, arts and craft centre, sewing centre and a conference hall

SLCBO believes it is important for any project of this type to obtain an income source that does not solely rely on donations from charitable organizations or private individuals. This helps to make the project in the long run self-propelled. Therefore SLCBO bought a plot near Freetown, the area called River No. 2 It should be a center that will include youth and cultural center, conference center and opportunities for visitors to stay for shorter periods.

The center will be operated by the project. There will be opportunities for young people from school on Bonthe and move near Freetown for further education or older who live in the community. The fact that the center will be operated as such conference, means that there are opportunities for practical work, so that young people can get job opportunities in safe environments and training. We will build it so the center can accommodate media center and internet cafe, sewing room and premises to be used by those who support SLCBO

Media Centre – In Sierra Leone, more than 60% of the population is illiterate. This high level of illiteracy in a country once deemed the ‘Athens of Africa’ has significantly contributed to the under development of the country. The youths unfortunately make up the majority of this illiterate mass. Indeed the Truth and Reconcialiation Commission (TRC) report did point to this factor as a major cause of the decade long civil war. As a means of engaging the youths, SLCBO hopes to establish a media centre which will help create a critical mass and self conscious youth. This centre shall provide free satellite television broadcast to all who visit it.

This is a rarity in a country like Sierra Leone where only the rich can afford to view satellite television. This media centre will also be showing live football matches as well as other sporting events. This we believe will significantly contribute in getting these idle youths off the streets and consequently away from crime. It is worth noting that in Sierra Leone football is the major sport with thousands of people endlessly cramming video centers to watch European league matches as well as the UEFA Champions League and Europa Leagues.
