Help People Help Themselves is a charitable community based organisation established to provide basic support for the less privileged, needy and disadvantaged. This organisation is borne out of the dire need to raise the people of Sierra Leone from the ashes of war. With particular emphasis on women and children, the organisation hopes to enhance self reliance and independence to this vulnerable group of people.

At present, the organisation is supporting a community school in Bissau Village to provide them with modern school structure and furniture. Bissau village is a village about 10 km walk away from Bonthe Town within the Sherbro Island, Southern Sierra Leone. With an approximate population of about 200 people, it is one of the biggest villages within the Island on which many other villages rely.

This is thus the reason why it boasts of the only primary school around, to which pupils of about seven other villages attend. More than 160 children attend this school coming villages all around Bissau. The school structure is currently made of mud and grass which cannot withstand the torrential downpour of rain common with the Island. Following the decade long civil war of this country, many of the children who are the future leaders have been left unattended to.

The Island of Bonthe is particularly hit by this neglect. If this trend continues uncheck, in the next few years these children will have little choice but to resort to petty stealing, pick pocketing, gambling and violence, activities which fuelled the civil war. It should be recalled that during the war, many of these children were used as child soldiers. It becomes all the more essential that urgent steps need to be taken to prevent these children from reverting to their wartime activities. It is from this background that Help People Help Themselves is soliciting sponsorship for the construction of a four classroom structure with a staff room for the children of these communities.

Funding this project will significantly contribute to the lives of these forgotten and neglected children of Bissau village and its environs. The construction of a four classroom structure will ensure the children learn in a relatively conducive atmosphere without fear of disruption of the school process during the rains.

This will be an important way of rebuilding the shattered and devastating lives of these children following their bloody past. This project will also enhance the motivation of teachers to stay at this village school who otherwise might be tempted to leave for well established schools in the bigger towns. In the meantime, to ensure the continuation of the school, Help People Help Themselves has donated few bundles of corrugated iron roof to the school. This is enough only to shelter less than one third of the children.

I tillegg betaler Help People Help Themselves nå lønn til to lærerstillinger.
